Once the Nazi soldiers took a list of Jewish people away to be "relocated" the Johansens decided to help the Rosens go into hiding. With the help of Uncle Hendrik, the plan to help keep the Rosens safe has begun. This book is a race against time and the Nazi soldiers. Without Annemarie's help, bad things could happen to the Rosens. Will they make it safely to Sweden? Will Annemarie ever see Ellen again? This book really explains what it was like to be a child during this time. It is a book that is hard to forget and really helps you understand the hardships of the Holocaust.

Safe And Sound
March 17 1943- In the end, everybody got to Sweden safely. I also found out that Peter was captured and killed because he was in the Resistance. I just knew there was something special about him! A surprising fact that Mother told me was that Lise was once in the Resistance when she was alive. That is how she died. Nazi soldiers found their meeting place and invaded. Lise not knowing what to do ran for her life. Without knowing it, she ran into the street and was hit be a car. I am proud to be able to say that I had a family member who was in the Resistance. Thanks to Lise, many lives were saved.
It Was Time To Go
March 16 1943- Mother then led all of the "mourners" down a dark path and too the harbor. Ellen and her parents were included in that group of people. I wondered if i was ever going to see her again. Just in case I wouldn't see her again, I kept her necklace. Before they left Peter, Lise's fiancé, had given Mr. Rosen a package to give to Uncle Henrik who was already at the harbor. On their way out, Mr. Rosen tripped but got back up again. It wasn't until mother got home that we realized that when he tripped he dropped the package and didn't pick it up. It was urgent! Since mother had broken her ankle on the way back from the harbor, it was up to me to deliver it to Uncle Henrik. I put the package at the bottom of a basket and covered it with a napkin, apple, cheese, and bread. i sprinted to the harbor but got caught by two Nazi soldiers. Each of them with a dog. They searched through the basket and found nothing but a handkerchief in the package. They laughed at me then let me go deliver it to Uncle Henrik.
There Has Been A Death
March 16 1943- Mother and Uncle Henrik tricked Ellen and I. She had said that our Great-Aunt Birte had passed away and that the funeral was going to be held at the house by the sea. So, a casket had arrived at the house and Ellen and I picked dried flowers and decorated the house nicely for the service. It was time for the funeral to begin and the mourners arrived. The casket was closed when 4 armed Nazi soldiers came into the house suspiciously. They looked around and put their hands on the casket and suggested that we open it. mother said to them that she agrees that we should open it right now but the body could still have "disease germs". The soldier slapped mother across the face and yelled at her to open it after the soldiers leave. The room was silent as they exited. We waited a few moments then said a small prayer and opened the casket.Inside the casket there was no body, but there were blankets and jackets. They were passed out to each of the "mourners". What is going on?
The House By The Sea
March 6 1943- Ellen, Kirstie, Mother, and I were now living in a house by the sea. Ellen and I had no idea what the point of it was but we did whatever was told to us because of the threats from the Nazis. It was Uncle Henrik's house that he welcomed us into. It was in the middle of the woods, but still close to the sea. This was perfect for him because he was a fisherman. He had a nice boat named "the mother". One day i wish to sail on it. From the front porch of the old house, you could look out beyond the ocean and see Sweden, a free land.
It Will Be A Long Night
March 2 1943- These past couple of days were crazy. The Nazi soldiers had began to "relocate" the Jewish population to other far away places. So, the Rosens needed to go into hiding or get out of Denmark. Mr. and Mrs. Rosen had decided it would be best if Ellen pretended to be my late sister, Lise. That way she would be"part of the family," if the soldiers said anything. That night as we went to bed, 4 Nazi soldiers came to inspect our apartment. They were almost to me and Ellen's room when i quickly yanked Ellen's necklace off of her neck. It had the star of David on it. If the soldiers saw that then Ellen's cover would be blown. They came in, inspected, then left. We were safe but we needed to leave soon before anything else could happen.
